My hypnotherapy can reduce patient stress and anxiety prior to and during treatment. It can provide symptom reduction such as pain in its various manifestations.  It can encourage patients to take a positive perspective and an active role in their treatments, procedures and recovery. It can be extremely useful in treating anxiety, either as a primary condition, or co-morbid with other conditions. It can also help patients achieve important adjustments to their lifestyle, exercise, diet , alcohol, drugs and smoking in parallel with your treatments.

We would welcome your prescriptive brief and requests on any given case and will carefully follow that brief, working within your framework of instructions.

Contact Us via email or please feel free to call Paul Mullins our principal clinician personally on 0431 949766 if you’d like an initial telephone conversation or to set up a meeting.

Specific areas where we can be of assistance include the following examples:

  • Modifying the patient’s perception and experience of episodic and chronic pain.
  • Patient Treatment Compliance; where the patient is unlikely or unable to comply with your recommendations or requests, and wants help doing so. Especially useful for example in the early stages of diabetes diagnosis and treatment where urgent lifestyle changes are demanded.
  • Patient Mindset and Attitude, which can have mental, emotional and physiological benefits. Leveraging placebo effect, such treatments can correctly stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, circulatory and immune systems.
  • Patients demonstrating aphobiasand strong aversions to aspects of treatment such as needles, claustrophobia (MRI) etc.

Support of patients undergoing potentially arduous and debilitating courses of treatment such as rehabilitation, physiotherapy and oncology. Targeted Hypnotherapy can assist in reducing the negative impacts of the treatment experience, the processes of treatment and recovery.

Treatment Support Examples
Here are just some of the areas where hypnotherapy can be beneficial as an adjunct to traditional treatments. In many cases you can click through these subjects to read more.
  • Easier compliance with Medical Care directives
  • Pain Management (anticipated, pre and post procedural and chronic pain)
More Details & Specific Examples
The following provides deeper detail on specific examples of hypnotic and strategic psychotherapeutic treatments beneficial in parallel with traditional medical treatment.
  • Efficacy of Hypnotherapy in treating IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
As discussed in this recent and excellent article by ABC news, hypnotherapy can be highly effective in the treatment of IBS, and often associated conditions such as Anxiety. http://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2015-12-17/medical-hypnotherapy-evidence/7028738   Pain should never be ignored. It plays an important role. However, you probably don’t want to experience it any more than necessary, especially at times when you’re trying to rest or sleep. Hypnosis can help you to reduce, or in cases approved by your healthcare provider, even eliminated. Pain is triggered at the site of the injury or damage.  But the “experience” of pain actually “felt” in and controlled by the brain. This means the pain experience can be modified in the brain. Through Hypnotherapy, the pain signals can be present but you can learn how to keep them out of your awareness. Check out my web page specifically addressing Pain Management
  • Patient Treatment Compliance.
How effectively you prepare for, participate in and recover from medical treatment, as well as the results that you achieve, are all heavily influenced by how well you “follow doctor’s orders”. For many, that’s easier said than done. Suggestions such as “lose some weight”, “lay off the cigarettes and alcohol”, “get more weight bearing exercise” and “drink more water” are great examples of where many patients struggle to comply. Failure to comply with directives such as “rigidly follow this dietary regime”, “remember to take your medications when and how I prescribe”, “no more narcotics” and “do not self-medicate, mix medications or double dose” might actually be life threatening. If as a patient you’re for some reason unlikely, unwilling or unable to comply with what’s required, we can help. Discuss this frankly and honestly with your healthcare provider. If you’re finding compliance tough, ask him/her to write me a prescription detailing precisely what you need to do.  Targeted Hypnotherapy can be an extremely helpful way to improve your compliance prospects, and therefore the prospects of success for your overall treatment.
  • Patient Mindset and Attitude
Your subconscious mind and attitude can have an enormous effect on your physical wellness and healing. Your subconscious has recorded your perceptions of everything that happened in the past.  This programming influences your perception of the present.  Your thoughts from past experiences–and the emotions that went with them– greatly influence how you think and feel in the present. Just one example is the Placebo Effect.  It’s an often misunderstood and misused term.  In a nutshell, it describes where “The mind convinced the body that it was healing or healed…and the body believed it.” Hypnotherapy can target and activate positive placebo effect on the patient’s attitude t healing, and the body’s actual healing processes. This fascinating subject is explored in the context of hypnotherapy on my Placebo Effect web page. Another example is how your thoughts activate different parts of your nervous system.  Feeling agitated, fearful or anxious triggers the ‘fight or flight’ response–the “sympathetic nervous system”.  This is an innate response from the days when we had to be fearful of–and run from danger. Activating this part of the nervous system directs blood flow to rush to the large muscles in your body (your legs for example) while in ‘fight or flight’ mode.  Meanwhile, other organ systems such digestive, immune reproductive systems slow down or even shut down and don’t work correctly. Hypnosis helps move you out of ‘fight or flight’ into the calming, return-to-normal, healthy functioning part of the nervous system–the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing all of your major systems to function normally….including your immune system. When targeted to your specific condition or treatment, hypnotherapy can rid you of the negative, often worst-case scenario thoughts about your illness; replace them with relaxed, positive thoughts that support your body’s best-case healing response.
  • Cancer Treatments
Hypnotherapy is not of itself a treatment for cancer.  It can however provide very useful services in support of Oncology. The treatment of cancer is a challenging and complex field.  Managing and coping with the demands of your treatment is perhaps just as challenging. Targeted Hypnotherapy can assist in reducing the negative impacts of the treatment experience, the processes of treatment and recovery.  It can provide symptom reduction (pain and anxiety) and empower patients to take an active role in their treatments and procedures. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00207140701338647?journalCode=nhyp20
  • Reduction in chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV)
Six randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs) have been conducted. In five of these studies, participants were children. Studies were small but included comparison against other therapies and no treatment. Studies report positive results including statistically significant reductions in anticipatory and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting but a number of methodological limitations were identified. http://internationalboardofhypnotherapy.com/?page_id=26
