Hypnotherapy vs psychology and counselling...how do the costs and results compare?
Let's compare hypnotherapy to the most popular "talk-based therapies"
Hypnotherapy is still widely misunderstood. I'm often asked to explain the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy and traditional "talk-based" therapy techniques such as psychology and psychotherapy.
Traditional therapies will spend months or even years exploring your issue, where it came from why it occurs.
As a clinical hypnotherapist, I don't. My therapy is about focused treatment, delivering you real outcomes and positive change that lasts.
Hence the theme of this article..."Time-to-change". It's sometimes quipped that, with a counselling psychologist, your journey towards achieving real change in your thinking and habits is limited by three things:
-
- Your patience,
- Your budget, and
- Your sense of humor.
Cruel? Well, you can decide that based on your own experience. I have not yet found anyone within the client community that disagrees.
Some Independent Analysis
Howls of disapproval and poingnant hand wringing from the Physchologist community! Why doesn't one of those pesky naysayers put their money with their mouth is, they ask
Well, as it turns out, one of them has. If you check out the following article from American Health Magazine, you'll find an amazing comparison of the relative lengths of treatment and effectiveness of various therapy styles, based on upon statistics gathered by Dr. Alfred Barrios, PhD. http://stresscards.com/hypnotherapy_reappraisal.php
As you'll read, through approaches including directly addressing the unconscious mind under hypnosis, Clinical Hypnotherapy wins hands down.
- Psychoanalysis therapy achieves on average 38% recovery after 600 sessions. (Yes, you read that correctly).
- Behavioral therapy achieves on average 72% recovery after 22 sessions.
- Hypnotherapy achieves on average 93% recovery after 6 sessions.
...and the cost?
Let's assume an average session cost of
$200, the relative costs of a program of treatment are:
- Psychoanalysis: 600x$200 = $120,000 (38% effective)
- Behavioural Therapy: 22x$200 = $ 4,400 (72% effective)
- Hypnotherapy: 6x$200 = $ 1,200 (93% effective)
Were you as stunned by these stat's as I was?
Obviously this is illustrative, and that results vary according to a range of factors including the type of issue being treated.
And of course...there ARE many cases where Psychological and or Psychiatric treatment is preferred OR used in conjunction with Hypnotherapy.
None the less, isn't this an interesting insight into relative cost/effectiveness?
Perhaps by now you're wondering why you'd take the psychology or counselling route at all, especially when so often they also strongly advocate you be prescribed heavy duty medications such as anti depressant and anti anxiety pills. Hypnotherapy is a totally natural therapy and typically medication free. The exceptions are where your GP or Psychiatrist deems your condition sufficiently serious.
Tell me, how do you read the statement time-to-change now?
Now, with all due respect to the Psychology community, there are some exceptional practitioners among their ranks who do some VERY GOOD WORK. Hopefully this tongue-in-cheek dissertation does however illustrate the point. There's a big difference in what they do, and what I do.
Let me summarize with a metaphor...as we hypnotherapists so often do...to crystallize your thinking.
"If your house was on fire, you'd probably want help, urgently. Naturally you'd call 000; fire brigade! When the brigade arrived, just imagine the firemen wanting to spend a few days admiring the fire, pondering its origin and asking you how you felt about your home burning down... That definitely wouldn't cut it. You'd want it OUT...NOW."
Clients seek my help because their need has become sufficiently serious to do something about it. They've often been down the counselling route. Waaaay down. They want the highest probability of achieving the change they want; a real outcome. The benefits of fixing whatever it is vs. the consequences of not have tipped the balance. They want results, efficiently and effectively.
If YOU or someone YOU KNOW have been struggling to put out the fire for too long, please SHARE this page, and feel free to get in touch.
